When rules have to be enforced just to keep character in check, whether in a person or a group: it’s more than a warning sign of cultural erosion. It’s a alarming confession that the values aren’t being lived but merely performed. In healthy cultures, character and respect for each other flows naturally even in disagreements…especially in disagreements.
No one needs to be policed when purpose runs deep. But when enforcement becomes the only glue holding things together, the group isn’t aligned, it’s being contained. And management without meaning slowly drains the soul of any group. True character does not reveals itself by compliance, but in conviction : the choices made when no one’s keeping score.
